Volunteer-led operations
Passion and volunteer energy were powerful, but made structured scaling more difficult.
Client spotlight · Book Club Semarang
Not every organization that needs strategic support is a company chasing profit. Some are communities chasing impact—and Book Club Semarang, a reading community that promotes literacy culture and discussion among book enthusiasts in Semarang, is a great example. As the community grew, so did the complexity of managing and sustaining that growth.

Reading, learning, and growing together.
01 · The challenge
Community-led organizations like Book Club Semarang often run on passion and volunteer energy—which is powerful, but can also make it harder to scale in a structured, sustainable way. Book Club Semarang needed a clearer framework for managing and growing their community: turning informal momentum into a more deliberate strategy that could keep the reading culture they'd built alive and expanding.
Passion and volunteer energy were powerful, but made structured scaling more difficult.
Growth needed to be translated into a deliberate and repeatable community strategy.
The community needed to keep its reading culture alive while continuing to expand.
02 · The approach
180DC UNDIP's team worked closely with Book Club Semarang to understand the community from the inside out before proposing any solutions. The process focused on:
Taking the time to genuinely grasp what was and wasn’t working in how the community operated and engaged its members.
Rather than offering vague advice, the team built strategies on a solid, well-structured foundation.
Every recommendation was designed to be something Book Club Semarang’s organizers could realistically act on, not just an ambitious idea on paper.
The goal throughout was accessibility: strategies that a volunteer-run community could actually pick up and run with.
03 · The outcome
Book Club Semarang rated the team's work quality 5/5, along with strong marks across project scoping, problem identification, usefulness, and final pitching satisfaction.
“It truly amazed us how much effort and dedication the 180DC UNDIP team put into this project. The strategies and problem-solving approaches were not only well-structured, but also grounded in a solid and clear framework that made the recommendations easy to understand and implement. We really appreciate how the team took the time to deeply understand our community's challenges and translated them into practical, actionable solutions. This project has been incredibly helpful and has opened up new perspectives for us, especially in improving how we manage and grow our community moving forward.”
For Book Club Semarang, the engagement wasn't just about solving a problem—it was about gaining a new lens on how to nurture their community for the long run.
